Hey bloggies! I hope all of your weeks have been going well! I’ve been slowly continuing my way through part two of Eat, Pray, Love where she travels to India to learn about devotion. Part of her learning involves the practice of yoga.
This is a perfect time for me to read this part of the novel, since I’m just beginning my own journey with yoga. So far the extent of my experience with yoga has been a few easy classes at my university and a few solo sessions where I didn’t really know what I was doing. The little Yoga that I’ve done so far has mostly been for the purpose of stretching out my muscles. But yoga is so much more than just that, and I’d like to get as much out of it as I can.
[Source]“Yoga” means “to yoke”, or to join together, in Sanskrit. This pretty sums up all of my reasons for doing yoga. I’ve felt really off balance for the past few years, and I want to get back to that point of feeling at peace with myself. I was never really happy in high school, and then when I went to university I started exploring many different sides of myself and different lifestyles and I wasn’t able to settle comfortably into any of those “identities”. That’s when my ED swept in and muddled things even further. I’d like to spend some time now to find my “real” self and become more connected with that person. And hopefully through doing that, I’ll be able to crawl myself out of this bubble of isolation that has been surrounding me and become more connected to the world around me.
The type of yoga that has become famous as a Western practice is Hatha Yoga, which is the physical aspect of yoga. There are also other paths of yoga, and I’d like to try to explore all of these paths to get the most well-rounded yoga education. These are my specific goals as I begin my practice (my goals don't strictly follow the standard interpretations of these paths):
Hatha Yoga (the physical path): to practice yoga twice a week and to sign up for some classes
Raja Yoga (the path of meditation): to work on quieting my mind and stop constantly thinking about my mental to-do list and food obessions; to go out into nature to meditate
Karma Yoga (the path of action): to sign up for a volunteer opportunity that I’m passionate about; to be an active player in my own life
Jnana Yoga (the path of knowledge): to constantly expand my horizons by learning both inside and outside the classroom; to learn through getting out there and experiencing life
Bhakti Yoga (the path of devotion and love): to love with an open heart and no expectations; to show my love and appreciation for my friends/family more often
I believe that a nourished body is an important prerequisite for a nourished mind. I feel the most nourished when my diet consists mostly of real, whole foods with lots of fruits and veggies, plant based proteins, and whole grains. However I place a strong emphasis on the "mostly" because I don't want to place any restrictions on my food. Instead I'm going to focus on moderation and balance.
Breakfast bowls with fruit, yogurt and grains give me energy to start my day

Salads make me feel clean and pure. This one has orange-sesame marinated tempeh with romaine, avocado, carrots, cucumber, red pepper, pineapple, sunflower seeds, and dried cranberries

Fish is filling but light, so that I don't feel bloated and weighed down. This was a recipe from Fitness magazine for Grilled Halibut with Puttanesca Salsa and Parmesan Orzo

Do you practice yoga? Do you incorporate some of the other paths of yoga into your practice? What do you get out of it?

Yummy eats, my dear! As always, everything looks lovely. I practice yoga (I used to do more but my elbow is bothering me on the chatarungas). I do mainly Vinyasa Flow yoga, Power Yoga, and Bikram.
ReplyDeletethese are some BALANCED meals for sure! really appreciating the "union" between the yogurt and berries and cereal with nuts in ur breakfast!! <3
ReplyDeletei just recently found out what yoga meant- like u said "union". i read it in my local health magazine hehe
i love yoga, hot yoga is my favorite. ive been practicing on and off for 3 years only recently about 6 months ago, committing to it more regularily. in septemeber i start my yoga teacher training!
xoxo
This is such a lovely, well-written post Chelsea! Like yourself I only practiced yoga to stretch, but even by doing it for that (I do about 40 minutes of it a week, broken into 10 minute segments), I find myself at peace. Thanks for sharing the information about the different types of yoga...I had no idea and really want to look into these.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are enjoying Yoga! thanks for the mini lesson, so informative. I don't practice but I do enjoy reading and learning about it :)
ReplyDeletei like how you are "slowly continuing" through EPL. ;)
Great post, great eats, and great attitude, girl! I've been loving the idea of balance and moderation lately, and I've been trying really hard to free myself from a lot of the restrictions that held me back in the past when I labelled food/experiences as "good" vs. "bad". There is food; healthy and maybe not so healthy, but we need a good balance of both. There are experiences; happy and painful, but we need a good balance of both.
ReplyDeleteI don't practice yoga, per say, but I use a lot of the poses for my stretching, and I practice meditation and deep-breathing exercises as well, to try and develop a better mind-body relationship. Woo! Yes! Balance rocks!
Why does your food always look so awesome?
ReplyDeleteI need better balance. I just don't know if Yoga is my thing...but maybe...hmm.
I love fresh wholesome food- it's so beautiful! haha that prob. sounds nerdy but seriously...look at your pics :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the bit about yoga. I practice it mostly for stretching but it's also nice to calm my mind
I love this post!! Especially because I just began my yoga journey in March. I've definitely found that it makes me much more calm and decreases anxiety/stress. It has also caused me to stop being so consumed with how many calories I'm burning during exercise. Instead I focus on how I *feel.*
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to grab a copy of Eat, Pray, Love for weeks now! I want to read it before the movie comes out.
I don't practice yoga and I say this often but I should. I think something calming would be a great compliment to all the high energy activity I am doing.
ReplyDeleteI really like that quote about balanced food, mind and body.
I think yoga is absolutely amazing. I've done it in the past as a way of getting in touch with my body, and making peace with it. I feel like I'm much more self-aware when I'm practicing yoga regularly. I've gotten out of the habit recently, but I really want to start back up again!
ReplyDeleteI've just recently started incorporating some yoga into my life and am in love. I love the feeling of it and the changes you notice almost immediately, even with such a small amount!
ReplyDeleteAnd I also agree - the balanced eats, mind, and body thought is oh so true.
Thanks for the great info!!
I would love to get into yoga more - you inspired me to do an AM workout when i get up in the morning. I am sure 10-15 mintues of yoga in the morning will help me feel more awake, stretched out, and ready to start my day!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post as always Chelsea!
love hearing about your yoga passion!!
ReplyDeletei REALLY need to get into yoga more for real! it always makes me feel soo good!
I do yoga sporadically - I wish there was a quality inexpensive studio nearby but unfortunately I can't afford an expensive membership right now. Love your yogurt breakfast - so colourful!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! Do you know about these yoga books?

I love yoga! I used to do a daily practice in high school. I did it almost every day for a year. It was amazing and I made such vast improvements. I could do things that I never that I would be able to do. Unfortunately, when I went away to university, my yoga practice fell by the wayside. I went once a week if I was lucky, and sometimes if I got to my class too late it would be full. I was really sad, and I was too sick and too tired to do the yoga on my own. I needed the instruction. Anyway, I started doing it again when I returned to Toronto. I still don't do it as frequently as I would like, but I'm working towards it. I love it! And I love your yoga goals. I think they are very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteChels, i cant believe my pictures arent showing up on my blog! ur the first person to mention this :(
ReplyDeleteits kind of not so fun to read when u cant see pics, hopefully the glitch sorts out soon! SORRY LOVE :(
